Since our dirty little friend was dying,
I decided to open her up and prod her insides,
and then ceremoniously drove a stake through her heart,
ending her misery. But rather than grieve, I went onto do other things.
Yes, the above was inspired by this.
I’m looking into alternatives. It’s a pity I can’t wait for the Apple Intel Powerbook I’ve salivated over since it was announced.
Ah well.
My personal recommendation: An AMD dual-core.
What decent company provides such a laptop? With a moderately small form factor and weight and power hungriness?
Did you check out ALIENWARE’s laptops ?
I don’t want another large laptop. Their’s are gaming desktop replacements.
If the 12″(or 13″) Intel Powerbooks were out, I would snag me one of those, but for now it’s either a tiny Thinkpad or a tiny G4 Powerbook. I picked up a 17″ G4 Powerbook (the only size they had in stock) today and almost walked out of the store before returning it. I just want it small. All I really do is ssh into other machines to get work done and give talks. The actual performance of the laptop itself isn’t important, like those Alienware machines.
My post was in response to your comment “What decent company provides such a laptop? “. And alienware has tiny laptops too, not only desktop replacements and gaming m/c.
They’re all celeron based. I’d at least like a Pentium-M.
Ok, now I need your definition of “decent”.
A somewhat-heard-of name which I (or you or anyone else) will be likely to trust?
There is a little configure button there , plus Alienware also has dual core AMD’s. Also, Alienware is a supplier for the US DoD (which means you can trust the name, or can we ? :) )
I didn’t notice. They advertised it’s celeron based in the front, so I stopped looking. These are actually quite small, comparable to mid-sized thinkpads which I will be happy to go for, and for whatever reason, they’re so much cheaper. (Unfortunately though, cheaper is not good in my head).
The dual cores, while performers, are way out of line in terms of the dimensions and weight I am looking for. I don’t have a problem with Alienware, the company, and think their cases (both laptop and desktops) look quite cool.
